Today marks our Dasah Brielle Dennis' second birthday in heaven. Oh how we still think of her and miss her, my second granddaughter. She came with sounds and bubbles and so much chubby cheek sweetness. She came to us November 13, 2014 and spent 12 amazing hours in all of our arms.
I wrote this poem last spring, but felt like now was the time to share it with Lindsey and Kevin and my family. I have had many thoughts about how grandmas grieve. We step into not only the loss of a child, and all the grandma moments we are going to miss, but we also step into the emotions of our children's own deep loss as we watch them go through something we want to protect them from, but can only pray them through. I hope to have some more thoughts in the future for grandmas who grieve for the losses their children experience. But for now, I just want to share this poem. It was written in honor and reflection of our beautiful granddaughters, Sophia Kyla and Dasah Brielle Dennis.
How Grandmas Grieve
We make outfits
We have showers
We make blankies
We send flowers.
We write notes
Make calls and text
And wonder what
The Lord has next.
We pray daily
We cry often
Remembering
That little coffin.
We have questions
About this story
But know God
Is receiving glory.
We frame pictures
We make "Hope" trees
We spend more time
Now on our knees.
We take long walks
Questions pending
Lead to hearts that
Are surrendering.
One day we'll hold
Their precious faces
In our hands
With heavenly praises.
Then we'll find
The Lord redeeming
Each moment lost
Will have new meaning.
